Free Reading Program

The American Association of University Women-Dearborn branch is inviting local high school and college staffs and students from the Dearborn area to attend a free program relating to STEM/STEAM careers in April 2020.  Please extend/post the following invitation to all interested staff and students on our behalf in your building in a timely manner.

Thank you, Rosa Scaramucci, VP Program AAUW-Dearborn

Stemming the Tide and Breaking the Ceiling

Interested local high school and college students and staffs are cordially invited to attend A BIG READ Event entitled Women in Stem Careers hosted by the American Association of University Women-Dearborn. This free program is scheduled for Saturday, April 25th from 1-3 p.m. It will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church Lounge located at 120 North Military, 48124. Member Sarah LeBrell will lead a panel discussion featuring women in STEM/STEAM careers. This is an opportunity to have a clearer understanding of equity issues that women in our community have faced in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Light refreshments will be served.

Applications Now Being Accepted for 2020-2021

Applications for STEM are now being accepted for the 2020-2021 school year.  For any questions please email Ms. Fryzel at

Current 5th graders attending a DPS student do not need to apply.  Letters of invitation will be sent out the first week of March to qualifying students.

Application deadline is MONDAY, MARCH 2ND
We are accepting applications from the following students:
1.  Current 6th and 7th grade DPS students wanting a possible empty seat in 7th and 8th grade next year.  Application link here:
2.  Current 5th, 6th, 7th students who live in the DPS school boundaries, but do NOT currently attend a DPS school.Application link here:

We have set a minimum NWEA reading score of 222 and a minimum NWEA math score of 231 as our baseline (winter 2020 5th grade scores).  In addition, students will need to have earned a 3 or a 4 on their 4th grade math and reading M-STEP tests.  However, having these minimum scores does not mean that a student will receive an invitation.  The top 120 students may very well achieve beyond these minimum scores.  Invitations to apply will be mailed home sometime in February.

For a student that applies, his/her application will be ranked with the 120 invitations that we send home to DPS students.  If s/he ranks in the top 120, s/he will be asked to email his/her interest in attending in the Fall.  If s/he does not rank in the top 120, s/he will not receive a final invitation.  Again, meeting the minimum scores does not guarantee acceptance.

Once the 120 students have responded to their invitations, if we have more than 60 students “accept”, there will be a lottery.
