STEM Middle School

Mindfulness Gathering

S.T.E.M. has introduced Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning to enhance our learning environment. The goal is to have students internalize life skills and apply them in the real world.  Support staff and teachers will introduce interventions and mind sets that offer adolescents a purpose for learning that is larger than their own self-interest and help them  adopt a positive attitude.

The first set of presentations for the students will be to hear Dr. DeSouza speak about mindfulness and setting a purpose. It will be held on November 12, 13 and 14 from 8 to 9 am in the MBCC Auditorium.

If you would like to preview the 12 minute TED talk, it is titled “There is more to life than being happy”  by Emily Esfahani Smith.  Research has found that adolescents who say they are learning in school so that they can make a positive difference in the world show greater grit (perseverance toward long-term goals), self-control, and greater behavioral persistence  in college.  We will be discussing work habits, task persistence, prosocial behaviors and social skills.
